We meet with visionary hotelier Natalia Xamena at her sunny hotel in Mallorca which she calls home. Founded by her grandfather and grandmother, Hotel BonSol has continued to shine through generations with their innate love and passion. Terraces of lush forests, Mediterranean architecture and rays of golden hues, Natalia takes us behind the scenes of Hotel BonSol set in Balearic Islands.
“The BonSol is my home, my workplace, my childhood, our family’s heritage.”
Hi Natalia! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Natalia Elena Xamena Starkey, born and raised in Mallorca by a Mallorcan father and an English mother. I grew up wild and free in the wonderful premises of the Hotel BonSol Resort & SPA, and went to school in Mallorca until the age of 16 before leaving to Germany to finish my school studies at a boarding school and learn German before studying hotel management at EHL.
After my studies, I came back to work at the hotel for a while, moved to Barcelona, and after meeting my husband, Federico Giannini, I moved to Rome, Italy in the summer of 2011.
During my Italian period, I had my 2 kids and dedicated most of my time to being that, a mother. In 2019 we came back to Mallorca, and a year later I started working at Hotel BonSol, but very shortly after the hotel closed due to COVID. During that time I became a yoga teacher, did some online teaching, and started working as a contemporary art consultant at a prestigious art gallery in Mallorca. I have always been an amateur art geek and this job was a dream come true. As the Hotel re-opened, I once again tried to juggle between the two jobs, but I had to let go of what wasn’t mine…
Marketing, social media, and a clear positioning of the hotel became my goal. I wanted the Hotel BonSol to be seen as the icon it is to me and patiently try to unlock its full potential.
Tell us about Hotel BonSol, and what it means for you?
The BonSol is my home, my workplace, my childhood, our family’s heritage, and the work of a lifetime of now 3 generations. It is my/our pride and I love it endlessly.
“My grandfather, Don Antonio, loved the sea. He would bathe in it every day year-round before starting his day's work.”
Could you share with us the history of the Hotel BonSol?
My grandfather, Don Antonio loved the sea. He would bathe in the sea every day, 365 days a year, before starting his day's work, in the Bay of Palma. When the port began to expand, the water became less transparent, so my grandfather, in search of a nearby beach where the water was still clear enough for him to continue enjoying his morning swim, came across Cala Brugit, the cove where the BonSol is now located. He fell in love with it so much that he decided to move to enjoy his daily morning ritual in the clear waters of the Mediterranean.
He ventured to buy a building that then belonged to the Bendinat Castle, located very close to the cove. The building had 14 rooms and at that time it was the only building in Illetas. Antonio’s wife, my grandmother, wasn’t excited about leaving her comfortable home in Palma, and starting a new life in a big house without neighbors and far away from everything.
As my grandfather spent most of his days in Palma, my grandmother found it challenging to keep busy all day, resulting in quite an unexciting daily life. Following the philosophy of turning a problem into an opportunity, Don Antonio advised my grandmother to receive ‘guests’ at home to keep her active, and without hesitation, she applied the marketing of that time, and decided to invite all known and unknown taxi drivers to eat at the - then Hostal BonSol, to tell and show them about its wonders. Charismatic as she was, it didn't take her long to make it popular, as at that time the taxi driver was practically the one who decided where the tourist that arrived on the island, was going to spend the night.
Little by little, Don Antonio was enchanted by the atmosphere of the hotel, so he decided to change his profession and dedicate himself fully to the hotel business. It was then that the ‘success story’ of the now iconic Hotel BonSol Resort & SPA began with the help of this ‘power couple’.
“With 71 years of history, there are so many stories to tell!”
Could you share one or more of your favorite unique stories related to Hotel BonSol?
One of the most incredible stories to me is that one of our dear guests who was in love with the Bonsol, wrote on her will, that she was giving to her nephews an important sum of money, but that it could only be used/spent for a holiday in her favorite place. She wanted her dear family to enjoy the unique experience that is the BonSol.
Also, I have always loved listening to my dad telling me how as a little boy, while actor Errol Flynn was staying at the Hotel BonSol, he was taught the art of fencing by the actor himself, an expert in this art, which he applied to the different roles he played in movies. But with 71 years of history there are many more stories to tell :)
What is your favorite piece of local art or decor in the hotel?
A fisherman’s painting at the entrance hall of the hotel by Mallorcan artist Miret, and a beautiful wooden sculpture of a woman by Jaime Mir. I couldn’t really explain why, it’s just a feeling. I think art is like that, you can’t really explain why you love a piece, because it is more of a feeling, right?
What is your personal favorite spot at Hotel BonSol?
The cove, for sure. In the summer months because of its wonderful vibrant colours and livelihood, and in winter because of its absolute solitude and peacefulness. It is a magical place.
What’s the most unusual request you’ve received from a guest, and how did you accommodate it?
This story, in my opinion, is not short of genius, in regard to the way my dad handled the situation…
At the BonSol, we try to communicate with every guest daily to find out if they are enjoying the BonSol, and to get any kind of valuable and constructive feedback, as our main goal is to make our guests happy. This guest in particular did not look very happy, and as my father approached him, he would not say the reason for his dissatisfaction. My father insisted, arguing that if he would share the reason he could probably fulfill his wish, he answered, "Can you make your beach 1 mile long, as I like to run on the sand every morning."
My father cleverly answered, “I cannot change our beach but I will find a hotel with a beach that is long for you.” So, my father organized a taxi for the gentleman and gave the taxi driver instructions to take him to four different hotels. He chose one of them and came back the next day to say thank you, as he could run on the long beach. Then he asked for another favor: if he could come for dinner every night at the BonSol?
His wish was obviously granted. After a week, he came back to the BonSol and asked to speak to my father. He thanked him for helping him to enjoy a very pleasant holiday but said: "Next time, I prefer to stay at the BonSol, and instead of coming here for dinner, I will take the taxi to the long beach in the morning."
He has since become a regular guest of the BonSol.
What is a typical Mallorcan way to spend leisure time, and how do you spend yours?
Breakfast with Pa amb oli “llagosta” at the bar Bosch, followed by an endless beach or boat day. Swim at sunset and salty skin dinner at some seafood restaurant by the sea. I would spend my leisure time exactly as mentioned, but really, I spend it with my little family doing whatever my kids wish to do, since, especially throughout the summer months, my time with them is rare.
If you could swap lives with any hotelier in history for a day, who would it be and why?
I think I wouldn’t, if at all, maybe with my grandmother. She was such a power woman, ahead of her time. I greatly admired her and found what she managed to do during her lifetime pretty wonderful.
If you could have any superpower while traveling, what would it be?
See all must-visit destinations, be able to suck in all the information about them in record time to automatically be like a local. Knowing what to do, the best places to go to, being able to speak the language, etc.
“The cove is my favorite place because of its vibrant colours and livelihood during summer, and the solitude and peacefulness in winter.”
Most treasured souvenir from travels in your home?
Would have to be Disney travels with my family as a kid, and recently a trip with my family to Costa Rica which was a dream.
If you could spend a day with any artist or creative person, who would it be and why?
Monet without a doubt. How exciting to share a day with someone who, through his eyes, saw such a special kind of beauty, in which the sensation transmitted by the set of colors and shapes he saw was more predominant than the objects themselves... and which he then depicted in such a genuine and iconic way in his works. To this day there is no artist, living or otherwise, who manages to evoke in me what Monet's works do. They leave me in absolute awe, there are works of his that literally took my breath away for a moment when I saw them for the first time.
What does magique mean for you?
To me it means life, I cannot think of anything more magical than life itself.
What does photography mean for you?
The magical act of capturing a moment in time that will never ever happen again.
